Abstract
Assessment of myocardial deformation pattern is of fundamental importance in evaluating cardiac function. Left ventricular (LV) strain and torsion are two determinants of myocardial deformation which can be measured using variety of cardiac imaging techniques among which tagged magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) is considered as the gold standard due to its high resolution and in vivo nature. LV tagging in dense polar pattern, adapting well to the structure and motion of the heart, facilitates computation of these parameters. CIRCOME, which stands for Circumferential and Radial Compression Encoding, is the recently proposed method for strain extraction through images with polar tagging. The purpose of our study is to extend CIRCOME and optimize accuracy of its results. Moreover, we develop a simple and fast method to assess left ventricular global and regional torsion using radially tagged images. Finally, we demonstrate the reliability and usefulness of the novel polar tagging and the proposed method by investigating strain and rotation in healthy subjects and patients with cardiac contractile defects as well. According to our findings, strain and torsion are impaired in patients with cardiomyopathies, congenital defects, and Duchene muscular dystrophy
